Artist Bio

IMG_7921_edited.jpg

Jillian Campagna is an interdisciplinary artist from Cincinnati, OH.  A lifelong passion for biology, nature, and art has led to her integrative approach.  Jillian incorporates a research-based studio practice exploring elements of BioArt with traditional methods such as printmaking, drawing, installation, and video.  A strong component of the work investigates her inherent attraction to the natural world.  This research explores the necessity of interspecies entanglements and the complexities of her human position within ecological systems.  Jillian's most recent work reflects on symbiotic relationships, focusing on essential cycles of change and decay.  She collaborates with unstable and fragile living materials including bacterial cellulose, also known as SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast), in an attempt to understand these integral processes of ecology and relation to the human condition.

Change can be cruel, beautiful, and confusing, yet it’s imperative for life itself.  The resulting remnants are proof of life, of what was, and what has become.  They are the vessels of our existence.

Jillian is currently a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Cincinnati – DAAP (Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning).
